The liver of certain animals — including the polar bear, seal, and husky — is unsafe to eat because it is extraordinarily high in vitamin A. This danger has long been known to the Inuit and has been recognized by Europeans since at least 1597 when Gerrit de Veer wrote in his diary that, while taking refuge in the winter in Nova Zemlya, he and his men became gravely ill after eating polar bear liver. In 1913, Antarctic explorers Douglas Mawson and Xavier Mertz were both poisoned, the latter fatally, from eating the liver of their sled dogs. »

A diet of chicken, fish and protein shakes might do wonders for people with brain injuries. Akiva Cohen of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his colleagues mimicked brain injury in mice by injecting fluid through a hole drilled in their skull. After seven days, the brain-injured mice had much lower levels of three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), leucine, isoleucine and valine, compared with control mice. These are found in protein-rich food and are known for their ability to build muscle. »

If you are developing a portal, you will definitely need the engine to send out emails, but in Windows, if you have Apache, PHP and MySQL installed, the mail() function of PHP will not work without additional configuration. Read on, and you'll realize that today this isn't a challenging task, and you can even develop your application without Internet access. »

The BiDi Screen is an example of a new type of I/O device that possesses the ability to both capture images and display them. This thin, bidirectional screen extends the latest trend in LCD devices, which has seen the incorporation of photo-diodes into every display pixel. Using a novel optical masking technique developed at the Media Lab, the BiDi Screen can capture lightfield-like quantities, unlocking a wide array of applications from 3-D gesture interaction with CE devices, to seamless video communication. Wow! Someday we'll be able to make decent photographs with our mobile phones! And by decent photographs I mean pictures that are not exclusively composed of yellow or blue shapes and some white areas. It's not the megapixels that count, it's the image quality, finally companies are starting to realize this. »

On rare occasions some people actually voluntarily arranged to be buried alive, reportedly as a demonstration of their controversial ability to survive such an event. In one story taking place around 1840, Sadhu Haridas, an Indian fakir, is said to have been buried in the presence of a British military officer and under the supervision of the local maharajah, by being placed in a sealed bag in a wooden box in a vault. »

The world is full of many mysterious and spectacular animals, but our knowledge of the breadth and depth of nature's diversity is scattered and fractured and fragmented. The idea is to ms paint an animal in its natural environment (i.e. a field, the hood of your car on the freeway, etc) along with a little-known factoid pertaining to said animal. This is simply awesome! »

It's finally here, check out the post for pictures! »
